Lumière Festival Updates

Festival Partners with Canada Science and Technology Museum

We are delighted to be joining with the Canada Science and Technology Museum’s new exhibition - Odyssey of Light. Lumière staff members are proud to be training Museum staff in the fine art of lantern making and we will be providing supplies to the museum for all their lantern making activities. Lumière lanterns will be on site at the V.I.P Opening Night event on November 24th. Additionally, the Museum has purchased 30 star lanterns, 10 star lantern kits and many Lumière t-shirts. These items will be sold in the Museum gift store.

Odyssey of Light

Entertaining, comforting, powerful and ubiquitous, light guides us through our days. This is the fascinating Odyssey of Light. Visitors will wonder, observe and discover in this fascinating environment where each artifact, interactive and photograph is unveiled in the magic of light.

Holiday Programs – December 20 to January 2 (9 am to 5 pm)

Inspired by the new exhibition Odyssey of Light, celebrate the holiday season by exploring the science and beauty of this amazing phenomenon. Play at our shadow puppet theatre, join workshops on candle of lantern making, and curl up by the glow of our “campfire” for daily stories.

Winter Solstice – December 21 (6 to 9 pm)

Celebrate the shortest day of the year with indoor and outdoor activities that the whole family will enjoy. Take a sleigh ride through the museum grounds, or try your hand at stargazing as you enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate! Free admission with a donation for the Ottawa Food Bank. Make sure to look for Lumière lanterns and free lantern making activities.

Lumière Lantern Workshops

We continue to offer facilitated lantern making workshops for private functions and public events. In December, we will be teaching lantern making to grade 5/6 boys at Fernhill Private School and then we will be celebrating Chinese New Year by offering lantern workshops at the Painted Turtle - an arts studio in Westborough.

If you would like to have a lantern making workshop at your next event please contact the CCCC office at 745-2742.

Lumière Festival Planning Committee

The Lumière Festival can always use assistance. This year we have formed a planning committee so that members of the community can become more involved in the organization of the festival. We need help with marketing, sponsorship, promotions, volunteer coordination, lantern creation, costume making, and event logistics. The next meeting will take place at the Crichton Cultural Community Centre on Monday January 16th, 2006. Please contact Joanne Hughes for more details, 745-2742.

Much thanks goes to Bob Burchill. Bob performed death defying feats of bravery while hanging the festival’s lantern stock at the CCCC.
