Lumière 2005
Beautiful, beautiful, magical! One of the most wonderful
experiences of my life - the taste of wonderment it
provoked brought me back to the glorious day of my
childhood. Excellent combination of high caliber performers
and grassroots participation.
The Crichton Cultural Community Centre is getting
ready to light up Stanley Park with Lumière
2005 on Saturday August 2005. Our community is enthusiastic
about the potential for this festival. Many who attended
last year said it was the best Festival they had ever
attended - high praise for a first year event. Our
lovely Stanley Park is a safe and well maintained park,
ensuring that people using walkers, strollers and wheelchairs
are able to enjoy the magical experience.
Throughout the summer of 2004 the Centre provided
lantern making supplies to three community organizations
and held 15 lantern workshops for a total of over 400
participants. Hoping to attract 1000 people to the
actual event, we were delighted when it attracted over
3500 visitors. The Lumière Festival website
has received close to 10,000 hits since June 2004.
The Lumière website (www.lumiereottawa.com)
will have a new and exciting look by May assisted by
our fantastic web company, Imatics Inc. and the extremely
talented illustrator Julia Breckenreid (www.breckenreid.com).
Julia has generously agreed to design the 2005 Lumière
poster aspects of which will be incorporated into the
website and other promotional pieces. Julia divides
her time with her illustration work, teaching in the
illustration programs at Sheridan College, the Ontario
College of Art & Design and to children at the
Royal Ontario Museum. Julia has illustrated for Chatelaine,
MacLean’s, Canadian Living, The New York Sun,
The Globe and Mail, and The National Post.

Lantern making workshops will begin in July and will
run until August 20. The Crichton Community Council
has offered the festival the use of the fieldhouse
for the entire week leading up to Lumière 2005
which will enable us to offer lantern making workshops
in the park as well as at the CCCC.
What an inspired way to make the best possible use
of our beautiful park and share it with the broader
Ottawa community.
We will also have the pleasure of welcoming back many
of the fine performers we saw last year including The
Fire Weavers, DJ Rise Ashen, and Aerialist/acrobat
Stacy Clark Baisley. An exciting addition for 2005
will be the Opera Lyra Company.
Following much the same format as last year, Lumiere
2005 will be working to expand some elements of the
festival:
- The lantern procession will kick off
the festival in style and will be led by our talented
performers.
- People were delighted to dress up in fairy and magical
costumes so we will be organizing costume workshops.
- Instead of jar lanterns, young children will now be
able to make their own lanterns using lovely pagoda
boxes. These boxes are safer, come with a handle
and make very attractive lanterns.
- We will be offering you some new lantern designs including
a tear drop shape and a water lantern.
- We will offer children’s lantern making at
the Canada Day festivities.
- To cover
some of the operational costs of the event
we will be asking for a $2/person donation.
A lack of government funding has given Lumière
the chance to be self sustaining in its second year.
We are counting on support from the community, businesses
and from creative fundraising to raise the necessary
funds. The performers and artists generously give of
their talents and time to help make this festival a
success. The Lumière Festival must commit to
recognizing their contribution through payment of professional
fees.
Financial supporters are thanked with on-line and
print promotion. We are also working on a sponsorship
package
which will highlight company logo placement opportunities. Please contact Joanne Hughes at 745-2742 to volunteer,
sponsor, or suggest!
