August 4th, 2006
New Provincial Program Promotes and Celebrates Province’s Diversity and Heritage

Ottawa – The Crichton Cultural Community Centre/Lumière Festival 2006 has received $18,000 from the McGuinty government’s Ontario’s Community Builders Program, Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier, announced today.

“This is an investment in the celebration and appreciation of the heritage and contributions of Ontario’s diverse communities,” said Meilleur. “It will help us to recognize and honour the communities who helped build this great province.”

The funding, provided by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, is supporting 13 community-based projects across the province.

“Ontario’s Community Builders program is all about celebrating the history, culture and contributions of those communities who have enriched our province and helped make Ontario the great place it is today,” said Mike Colle, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

The third Ottawa Lumière Festival, happening Saturday, August 12, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., is a celebration of the magic and beauty of light. The Festival accepts donations from participants and includes over 100 dazzling performers, 2000 magical lanterns, wonderful costumes and beautiful music. The event starts at St. Patrick’s Bridge off the Vanier Parkway.

“We are very happy to have been awarded provincial funding for the Lumière Festival,” said Joanne Hughes, Community Facilitator for the Crichton Cultural Community Centre. “The festival is a unique and magical event that brings diverse cultural communities and the arts together and the new funding will allow us to broaden participation from across the region.”

Projects funded through the Ontario’s Community Builders Program include cultural festivals, exhibits, educational programs, historical displays and a wide range of community events to celebrate Ontario’s diverse cultural communities.

The Ontario government provides funding of $300,000 annually in support of community-based programs across the province.
