2009 Lumière Festival Media Release

OTTAWA – The Sixth Annual Ottawa Lumière Festival, opens July 17th with the Many Hands Exhibit and continues until Saturday August 8th, 2009 with an evening exhibit of lanterns, art and performances from 5 to 11 p.m.. The lantern exhibit will present a magical evening and for the first time will include an army of fairies to bring Stanley Park in New Edinburgh alive. There will also be over 150 other live performers, including professional fire spinners, dancers, acrobats and musicians.

The Ottawa Lumière Festival is a chance to celebrate the magic and beauty of light. The Festival is a free event featuring an annual photography exhibit which explores themes relevant to light, art and community, and an evening exhibit of stunning light installations, dazzling performers, 2000 magical lanterns, wonderful costumes and beautiful music, all in the stunning setting of Stanley Park along the banks of the Rideau River.

They say that “many hands make light work,” and Matthew Carrington’s job was to show with his photos just how it was with Lumière that a whole community of hands makes these lights work. The 18 images in the Many Hands exhibition are selected from more than 3,000 frames that Matthew shot in July and August 2008, and on the night of the lantern exhibit.

At the Lumière Lantern Exhibit friends and neighbours dress in costumes and carry glowing lanterns. The park buzzes with an enchanted feel as Lumière creates an atmosphere of the ethereal.

For 2009 the festival has a new theme – THE GLOAMING – that will show twilight in 3 distinct areas:

METROPOLIS – a bright, vibrant and abstract cityscape.
SURREALISM - an unearthly realm of white spirits & shapes.
FLORA - an ethereal forest and meadow with fantastical trees and flowers.

Also new for 2009:

  • The Lumière Studio is now open so come and take a lantern making class and make your own beautiful lantern. Or host a Light Up Lantern Workshop at your own home, business or organization!
  • We are recruiting fairies! If you have a twinkle in your eyes and still believe in the magic of fairies come and join the Lumiere fairy crew.
  • Too Cool Tulle Tent and Fairy Circle at the evening lantern exhibit - costume creators and face painters will make wings, tutus, hats and Lumière lovely designs.
