Kanika Thakar

Kanika Thakar started her training in Kathak, an Indian classical dance form, over seven years ago under the direction of Guru Saveeta Sharma, a disciple of the great Guru Pandit Birju Maharaj, at Upasana the Spirit of Dance in downtown Ottawa.

Kanika completed her Rangapravesh (dance graduation) in 2005 with a performance at the Museum of Civilization after which Kanika traveled to India for 6 months to study under Guru Pandit Birju Maharaj.

anika has given several performances in Canada and throughout the United States, most recently on Parliament Hill as part of Canada Day celebrations. Currently, Kanika is working on the Upasana production of WildFire to be presented spring 2008.

Kanika's slender physique and telling glances lend itself well to the storytelling aspects of Kathak.
