Ross Nicholson
Ross Nicholson is an industrial designer that has worked as an architectural lighting consultant since 1990. A passion for the aesthetic, an understanding of human perception, a strong background in electrical engineering, and personable team skills have resulted in the consistent realization of aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and functional environments. As a luminaire designer, Ross is intimately familiar with the nuances of light sources, control devices and the manipulation of material properties in order to produce fixtures that address technical, aesthetic and perceptual requirements. Ross has received numerous awards for his lighting work and been published in the premier lighting industry journal, Lighting Design + Application (LD+A). He is also a member of the Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA).
He has only recently turned his focus to the purely artistic expression of light. Prior to the Lumiere Festival, his most recent work was a shipping container done for Philips Solid State Lighting for the Transitions NYC show at LightFair in New York in May of 2007 (see images.)
Ross has also taught lighting and industrial design as a faculty member and sessional at the college/university level since 1992. His educational credentials include a Master's Degree in Architecture and a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design. His M. Arch. thesis work developed an emulation of a new, more intuitive cognitive model for architectural lighting software.
